DOGRISK group collects blood, fecal, hair, and urine samples in different dog events from all dogs regardles of the breed, age, or health status into theirbiobank. Sampes are also taken during clinical trials, when it is possible to get also different kind of tissue samples. Data from nutrition, living environment, and disease history are collected from every sample donor dog, so that the environmental health effects can be studied thoroughly.


As the DOGRISK group studies the effects of environment, genetics, and nutrition to the predisposition to diseases, we need many kinds of samples, techniques, and collaboration.

Through genetics we are searching differences in DNA, transcriptomics tells how the genes are expressed as RNA molecules, and proteomics studies the proteins that are built up according to these instructions of DNA and RNA.

Epigenetics is the research area of the epigenome which controls the expression of the genes, and which is constantly regulated by the environment and diet. Metabolomics tells us about the end products of the metabolism, and gives an exact picture of the pathways that are active at that moment in certain tissue. These two omics help us to dig even deeper to the environmental and dietary factors in disease risk. Microbiomics studies the gut microflora.

Nutrigenomics studies the interaction between genes and nutrients. It is applied to find diets and nutrients that have an effect on the gene expression and through this they either increase or decrease the risk of getting certain disease. On top of that, different gene variants are searched using nutrigenetics, as they can affect to the way an individual reacts to certain nutrient or diet.
